Industrial Minerals reported that buyers in Europe, India and North America have asserted that after almost three years, fake flake graphite has come back to the natural graphite market. It is primarily being produced in China.

As quoted in the market news:

Fake flake or pressed flake graphite is not new to the industry. The product is derived from compressing fines into larger sizes. Many smaller producers pass natural small to medium flake graphite through rollers to compact them into the larger flake sizes of +50 and +80 mesh.

To the naked eye it is almost impossible to detect and the fake material only becomes evident once the product is applied to technical applications such as a refractory brick.

Producing fake flake is a simple, low cost process and requires no flotation or purification.
