Despite trying to diversify its oil-dominated economy, Western Kazakhstan will not be reviving its uranium mining industry in the near future, according to the Times of Central Asia.

Despite trying to diversify its oil-dominated economy, Western Kazakhstan will not be reviving its uranium mining industry in the near future, according to the Times of Central Asia.

As per the release:

Large uranium deposits were discovered in the Mangistau Region in the early 1950s and their development fueled the region’s economy. Aktau, the main city of the Mangistau Region, was initially built around the Caspian Mining and Metallurgical Plant. The world’s first fast-breeder nuclear reactor — the Mangyshlak Atomic Energy Combine with a BN-350 reactor — was built near Aktau in mid-1970s.
