Sotheby’s to Auction 8.72-carat Fancy Vivid Pink Diamond

Forbes reported that Sotheby’s Geneva-based Magnificent Jewels and Noble Jewels auction will include an 8.72-carat fancy vivid pink diamond called the Historic Pink. The auction house describes it as “extremely rare and highly important.”

The sale will be held on May 12, 2015.

According to the Gemological Institute of America, it is believed to have been owned by Princess Mathilde, the niece of Napoleon Bonaparte. The stone is also distinguished by its classic non-modified cushion cut, unusual in a pink diamond, Sotheby’s said.

The pre-sale estimate is $14 to $18 million.
