Japan Jan Copper Cable Shipments up 4.9 Percent

Reuters reports that while domestic demand remained flat, Japanese copper wire and cable shipments rose 4.9 percent in January from a year earlier.

The market news is quoted as saying:

Exports of copper cable and wire jumped 53.1 percent in January to 2,100 tonnes, but domestic demand climbed only 3.6 percent to 54,500 tonnes.

The appetite for copper, used in a wide range of products from utensils and construction materials to computer chips, is often seen as a gauge of economic activity.
