Is loading up on silver a good investment idea?

USA Today reports that Silver is the new gold.

The editorial is quoted as saying:

The prices of gold and silver have been on a tear since, most recently, 2007 when the stock market peaked. Investors look to precious metals, namely gold and silver, as stores of value to preserve their assets if paper currency depreciates.
