Cairn Energy Research President Sam Jaffe sees lithium-ion battery demand rising from 80 GWh this year to as much as 750 GWh in 2026.

Speaking with the Investing News Network at Cathodes 2017, Sam Jaffe, president of Cairn Energy Research, shared his thoughts on demand for lithium-ion batteries, potential changes in battery chemistry and what’s ahead for the sector.
Demand for lithium, cobalt and other battery metals is expected to surge as increased use of electric cars drives the need for lithium-ion batteries. “We estimate that lithium-ion battery demand will rise from 80 GWh this year to as much as 750 GWh in 2026,” he said.
At Cathodes, many attendees had questions about potential changes in electric car battery chemistry. But Jaffe believes lithium ion will continue to be the main battery technology used to power these vehicles.
“We will continue to live in an lithium-ion world for the next 10 years,” he said. Watch the video above to hear more of Jaffe’s thoughts on the lithium-ion battery sector and what to expect in the near future.
