Simon Moores, managing director of Benchmark Mineral Intelligence, shares his thoughts on the lithium market in this interview from Cathodes 2017.

Speaking with the Investing News Network at Cathodes 2017, Simon Moores, managing director of Benchmark Mineral Intelligence, shared his thoughts on the lithium market and other raw materials that are key for lithium-ion batteries.
“Those that control the lithium-ion battery industry will heavily influence the next generation of the auto sector and the energy space,” he said when talking about his recent US Senate hearing.
“The challenge for the industry is to turn a specialty niche into a mainstream, scaling up the specialty product, which will be a big shift [in the space],” Moores added, going on to explain what needs to happen for the industry to make that jump.
He also talked about how countries need to scale up the critical step of processing raw materials.
“It doesn’t matter how much lithium, cobalt or graphite you have on the ground. Is it the right material? Can you process that into a consistent, pure, battery-grade product? That is the biggest challenge for countries,” he added.
Watch the video above to hear more about Moores’ thoughts on lithium, megafactories and the future for raw materials. The transcript for this interview will be added shortly.
