Platts reported that preliminary data released by the International Lead & Zinc Study Group (ILZSG) shows that worldwide demand for refined zinc exceeded supply by 2,000 metric tons (MT) from January to October of this year.

As quoted in the market news:

Reported inventory levels fell by 208,000 mt over the same period, the ILZSG noted.

For January-October 2012, zinc metal output exceeded usage by 101,000 mt.

A 7% year-on-year increase in global usage of refined zinc metal to 10.94 million mt for January-October 2013 ‘was primarily influenced by a rise in Chinese apparent demand of 12.9% as well as increases in India, Thailand, Turkey and the United States,’ the ILZSG said, adding that in Europe, demand remained at the same level as in 2012.
