Calix Inc (NYSE:CALX) announced Bloomer Telephone Company, a leading exchange carrier (LEC) is leveraging end-to-end Axos E7-2 GPON solution to migrate their legacy infrastructure to a software defined access network.

As quoted in the text release:

With the Calix AXOS E7-2 Intelligent PON System, newly introduced Services Management Connector (SMx), and GigaCenters, Bloomer will deliver next generation services at a DevOps pace, including gigabit speeds, to all of its residential, business, and anchor institution subscribers in the city of Bloomer, Wisconsin. The combined solution also puts the foundation in place for Bloomer to seamlessly move to next generation fiber and SDN technologies, when ready.

“As our community continues to grow and evolve, we want to make sure our network is prepared to deliver the critical services our subscribers need to be successful in their daily lives,” said Kent Klima, General Manager at Bloomer. “Whether it’s students accessing the Internet in our local high school or a residential subscriber who works from home, they each rely on Bloomer’s broadband services to stay connected. Now, with the Calix AXOS E7-2 GPON solution in our network, we are confident that we can support whatever new applications the future may hold for us and keep our community on the leading edge of broadband services.”

Bloomer is an indispensable member of the community in and around Bloomer, Wisconsin. As the broadband service provider to the local school district and hospital, the services Bloomer delivers to these institutions ensure that they stay connected to the larger world. This commitment is a driving force behind Bloomer’s network transformation as their ability to deliver faster speeds and more advanced services is crucial to the success of the city. As a recent recipient of a Broadband Expansion Grant from the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin (PSC), Bloomer is also expanding to bring fiber services to more rural areas in nearby towns of Howard and Tilden.

“A long-time Calix customer, Bloomer has always shown its dedication to its community by continuing to invest in its network to better meet their needs while delivering an unmatched subscriber experience,” said Skip Hirvela, vice president of sales at Calix. “As Bloomer moves forward with the AXOS E7-2 GPON solution, it will continue that tradition and ensure its entire subscriber base can take advantage of gigabit services. Beyond the delivery of new services, Bloomer will also be able to streamline its operations and prepare for the SDN-based networks of tomorrow.”

While the AXOS E7-2 GPON solution with SMx enables the evolution of Bloomer’s network, it also drives the service provider’s business model transformation. Through a common operational service model, Bloomer can leverage the unparalleled flexibility of AXOS to transition to a software defined access network without incurring the costs associated with integrating SDN controllers and orchestrators. Bloomer can deploy an SDN-based network with automated workflows today using its existing back-office business systems, saving money and reducing operational complexity.
