Bloomberg reported that he Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union in South Africa is stating that many of its members have rejected a pay offer from Anglo American Platinum (LSE:AAL), Impala Platinum (JSE:IMP) and Lonmin Plc (LSE:LMI). The miners have said they believe that contacting the workers directly is more democratic than going through the union, according to Bloomberg.
As quoted in the publication:
With a couple of branches left to check on, members at the mines “have rejected the offer, but we still have to formalize” the response to the companies, AMCU President Joseph Mathunjwa said in a phone interview. “You need to call them and tell them, even though they know.” The union met Impala employees on April 25 and visited some of Amplats’s mines over the weekend, with workers rejecting the wage offer at both companies, union Treasurer Jimmy Gama said earlier. AMCU is meeting Lonmin laborers today in Marikana and gatherings at the remaining Amplats mines should be completed tomorrow, he said. The union is set to talk with the mining companies again later in the week, according to Gama.
