The US Mint has now sold 40,175,000 ounces worth of American Eagle silver coins in 2013, higher than its 2011 record of 39,868,500 ounces.
The US Mint today broke its yearly sales record for American Eagle silver coins as 2013 sales reached 40,175,000 ounces. The previous record, set in 2011, was 39,868,500 ounces.
The news is not unexpected. Back in January, the Mint sold out of the coins and was forced to temporarily suspend sales; since then, sales have repeatedly hit highs.
In June, Bloomberg reported that the Mint had sold the most silver coins in the first half of the year since at least 1986; at the time, Richard Peterson, the Mint’s acting director, predicted that a new annual record might be coming.
The next month brought American Eagle coins sales that were 93.4-percent higher than the previous year, and by September, the Mint had already sold more American Eagle coins than it did for all of 2012.
The new yearly record was brought on by authorized purchasers buying the full weekly allocation of 500,000 coins, as per Bloomberg. The Mint plans to issue its final weekly allocation of coins on December 9.
