This morning, silver gained 0.24 percent, or $0.05, to trade at $20.82 an ounce, according to Reuters.

The metal, which usually tracks gold, is becoming increasingly appealing as investors receive more news about the crisis in Crimea. Just yesterday, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a treaty in Moscow making Crimea part of Russia, ignoring protests in the region and western sanctions. Though Putin says he has no plans to seize any other part of Ukraine, geopolitical tensions remain high.

Silver’s gains are being tempered somewhat by the expectation of news from the US Federal Reserve later in the day.
