The pressures are not as severe at the shallower platinum mines but additional support would still be necessary said the chairman.
Should these areas close up totally, which is not the norm, said Dixon, total redevelopment could take as long as a month.
Dixon said that if these additional costs were to be incurred in marginal stopes and a lot of work was required to re-open them it could tip these areas into being uneconomical.
