Mining Weekly reported South Africa’s Department of Mineral Resources has formed a new group with the specific mission of addressing the problems facing the struggling platinum mining sector.

As quoted in the market news:

Replying to questions at a conference on the future outlook of the local mining industry, Shabangu said at the Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS) that government had agreed with the platinum-mining industry that there was a need to work together.

The Minister’s comment follows the announcement of the London- and Johannesburg-listed Aquarius Platinum that it intended temporarily closing its 1 500-employee Marikana mine in Rustenburg.
