Mineweb reported that following news that members of South Africa’s Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) have been damaging property and intimidating workers, Lonmin plc (LSE:LMI) and Impala Platinum Holdings Ltd. (OTCMKTS:IMPUY) said they will “uphold their legal rights.”

AMCU members are currently on strike at the operations of both companies, as well as those of Anglo American Platinum Ltd. (OTCMKTS:AGPPY). Earlier this week, Amplats said it is suing the AMCU for damages.

As quoted in the market news:

Sue Vey, Lonmin’s spokeswoman, says the company sought an interdict on Friday for AMCU’s failure to abide by the picketing rules.

‘This interdict has been granted and Lonmin continues to explore its options of ensuring the viability of our business,’ she says.

Johan Theron, the group executive for corporate relations at Implats says the company sent most of its staff on paid leave to ensure the safety of its employees after dealing with a series of unlawful action from the union.

‘We have legal rights, just like they have legal rights so the ball is in their court,’ he says.
