As quoted in the market news:

Police are battling a huge rise in the theft of catalytic converters, chiefly from commercial vans and 4x4s.

Between January 1 and the end of May, the force recorded 249 thefts, compared to 47 in the same five months last year.

The devices, which limit toxic emissions from exhaust systems, are attractive to thieves because they contain precious metals such as platinum, rhodium and palladium.

Victims have been left with immobilised cars and hefty repair bills.
