Morning Market Breakdown, May 14: While precious metals didn’t see much progress on Monday morning, the major indexes shot out the gate into the green.
The S&P/TSX Composite Index (INDEXTSI:OSPTX) closed Friday (May 11) at 15,983.32 with a 23.82-point boost. Monday (May 14) morning found gains as it shot ahead 87.45 points to reach 16,070.77.
The S&P/TSX Venture Composite Index (INDEXTSI:JX) got a 8.22-point leap ahead to close Friday at 782.91. It picked up 7.76 points on Monday morning to reach 790.68.
Healthcare stocks gave the TSX a push in the right direction on Friday, as Canopy Growth (TSX:WEED) and Valeant Pharmaceuticals (TSX:VRX) grew 1.8 percent and 4.2 percent, respectively. Meanwhile, the index also found gains in real estate as Brookfield Asset Management (TSX:BAM.A) picked up 0.48 percent.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average (INDEXDJX:.DJI) grew 91.51 points on Friday, ending the week at 24,831.17. The index got another boost on Monday morning as it gained 115.29 points to hit 24,946.46.
The S&P 500 (INDEXSP:.INX) picked up 4.65 points to close Friday at 2,727.72. It continued into the green on Monday morning as it gained 11.28 points to reach 2,739.0.
Verizon (NYSE:VZ) and Merck (NYSE:MRK) were the Dow’s top performers on Friday, as they picked up 3 percent and 2.8 percent, respectively. In terms of weekly gains, the energy sector grew 3.8 percent on the S&P 500 while technology picked up 3.5 percent, as both Facebook (NASDAQ:FB) and Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL) gained more than 5 percent.

Daily metals
Gold skidded slightly on Friday as it closed at US$1,320.7 per ounce. It stayed stagnant on Monday when it maintained its stance at US$1,320.7. Silver hit a minor snag on Friday when it closed at US$16.75 per ounce. The precious metal continued to tumble on Monday morning as it hit US$16.68.
Copper simmered by Friday’s close as it capped the day at US$3.11 per pound. It took a small spill on Monday morning as it dropped to US$3.10,
Major miner news
- Barrick Gold (TSX,NYSE:ABX): Pueblo Viejo Dominicana Corporation, the operator of Barrick’s 60 percent owned Pueblo Viejo mine, has signed a 10-year natural gas supply contract. The mine, located in the Dominican Republic, will see its power generation facility converted from heavy fuel oil to natural gas, meant to lower costs and greenhouse gas emissions.
- Endeavour Silver (TSX:EDR,NYSE:EXK):Drilling from the company’s Parral property in Mexico has intersected high grade silver-gold-lead-zinc mineralization. Examination of the intersection has shown results of 1,660 grams per tonne (gpt) silver, 0.72 gpt gold, 6.52 percent lead and 14.45 percent zinc over 2.3 metres (m) true width within the San Patricio vein system.
