Reuters reported that environmental activists, including the global chief of Greenpeace, cut short their occupation of Russia’s first Arctic oil rig when hampered by icy water. The activists’ aim was to bring attention to the potential destruction of drilling for oil in the Arctic’s extreme conditions.

As quoted in the market news:

[The activists] took ample supplies and intended to stay for days, clinging to the side of the platform – Russia’s first offshore Arctic oil development – in tents pitched on small scaffolds.

They retreated to a Greenpeace ship “to avoid unnecessary risk in these freezing Arctic conditions,” the group said.

“Succeeded in our aim of drawing attention to Arctic destruction in Pechora Sea,” [Kumi Naidoo, Greenpeace chief] said in a later posting.
