Major mining investments under way in SA include Xstrata’s R4,9bn expansion of the Lion ferrochrome plant, which had been waiting for Eskom to promise electricity supply; three new shafts being built at Impala Platinum’s Rustenburg complex; Gold Fields’ South Deep expansion; and two new manganese mines in the Northern Cape.
