Northern Graphite Partners with Coulometrics on Lithium-ion Battery Project

Northern Graphite Corp. (TSXV:NGC,OTCQX:NGPHF) announced that it has partnered with Coulometrics LLC to manage the development of its proprietary technologies for manufacturing spherical graphite and bettering the performance of lithium-ion batteries. To start off, the companies will work on developing nanomaterial-based surface coatings for spherical graphite.
Greg Bowes, CEO of Northern Graphite, commented:
[T]he Li-ion battery industry is almost entirely dependent on China for the supply of SPG made from natural graphite. The Company’s objective’s are to provide Li-ion battery manufacturers with a stable, secure source of high quality, advanced graphite materials produced in an environmentally acceptable manner, and to capture additional margin from value added, upgraded products.
Dr. Edward Buiel, founder of Coulometrics, said:
Northern’s SPG has surprisingly good reversible capacity without the need for thermal processing which indicates very good natural graphite with a low degree of disorder in its crystal structure.” Dr. Buiel received his Ph.D in Physics from Dalhousie University and has extensive industry experience as Chief Technology Officer of both start-up and advanced stage companies.
Almost all SPG is produced from small flake concentrates and the yield is only 30% which is the largest cost in its manufacture. Northern has achieved yields up to 70% from its large flake graphite which will substantially reduce production costs. Only natural flake graphite that can be economically rounded and purified to 99.95%+C can be used to make SPG and it must be free of specific impurities. Northern has produced SPG from its concentrates, purified it using its own proprietary process, and successfully tested it in batteries.
