In a now deleted tweet, Facebook (NASDAQ:FB) board member Marc Andreessen said “Anti-colonialism has been catastrophic for the Indian people for decades. Why stop now?” Facebook, which has been generating its own controversy over its Free Basics program, has sought to distance itself from Andreesen’s comment.

According to an article on TechCruch:

Marc Andreessen is having quite a contrite Wednesday. Andreessen, who currently sits on Facebook’s board, caused a stir last night with his online response to Indian Internet regulator TRAI nixing Facebook’s plans to implement its ‘Free Basics’ program in India.
He took to the Twitterverse last night to express his irritation with the regulator’s decision with a statement that some on the Internet likened to colonialist attitudes.
[…] To his credit, Andreessen (or the A16Z PR team) quickly moved to apologize in a customary tweetstorm. Andreessen’s latest burst started last night when he announced his withdrawal from future discussions about Indian politics, and made it clear (in so many words) that he was against colonialism.
[…] Facebook also commented on the controversy.
“We strongly reject the sentiments expressed by Marc Andreessen last night regarding India,” the company said in a statement to the press.
