The Vancouver Sun reported that while 32 percent of Metro Vancouver residents support Fraser Surrey Docks’ (FSD) plan to expand its existing coal export terminal, 31 percent are against it and 36 percent are undecided, according to an Insights West survey. Interestingly, only half the residents polled were aware of FSD’s plan.
As quoted in the market news:
While a majority (72 per cent) of the respondents believe the expansion of the terminal will create more jobs, many expressed concern about the environmental impact.
According to the poll, 67 per cent of Metro Vancouver residents believe that coal dust is an environmental threat and believe it is a contributor to greenhouse gas and climate change.
Mario Canseco, vice-president of public affairs at Insights West, said the level of awareness of the project is particularly low in Metro Vancouver, especially when compared to other projects.
