Business in Vancouver reported today that a metallurgical coal mine project owned by HD Mining International is going ahead despite tough market conditions that have halted other projects in the area. HD Mining has come under fire for its use of Canada’s temporary foreign worker program. However, the miner says that if the project proves to be viable, it will look at hiring Canadian mine workers, according to Business in Vancouver.

As quoted in the publication:

The company has a “bulk sample” permit to mine 100,000 tonnes of metallurgical coal to test the deposit’s quality. If it proves to be high quality and economical to mine, the company plans to apply for a permit to build a new mine, and when that happens, Lekstrom said Canadians would be eligible for jobs there.
