Israeli Diamond.com reports that the Harry Winston (NYSE:HWD,TSX:HW) and Rio Tinto (NYSE:RIO) Diavik Mine, located in the NWT, is expected to produce 6.9 million carats of rough diamonds in 2011.
The story is quoted as saying:
The Diavik site – some 300 kilometers north of Yellowknife – was surveyed in 1992 and construction on the mine started in 2001. Diamond mining launched in January 2003, and the mine is assessed to have a production life span of 16 to 22 years. Originally, the mine was an open pit, but underground mining commenced in March 2010. By 2012, the Diavik diamond mine is expected to be fully underground.
