The reasons evoked by those who want to lift the embargo are very simple: since there is no longer any conflict, it’s no longer necessary to talk of conflict diamonds,” explains Michel Yoboué, head of the Abidjan-based Extractive Industries Advocacy Research Group. The group is pushing for interim measures to ease the ban, including the creation of a state buying house, approving a list of approved diamond buyers or ensuring Kimberley Process certification for Ivorian mines.
