    NC Uranium Enriched Plant Gains Approval

    CNBC reported that a nuclear power partnership between General Electric Co. and Hitachi was granted federal approval on Tuesday to construct the first uranium enrichment plant for commercial use.

    CNBC reported that a nuclear power partnership between General Electric Co. and Hitachi was granted federal approval on Tuesday to construct the first uranium enrichment plant for commercial use.

    As quoted in the market news:

    The Nuclear Regulatory Commission issued a license to General Electric-Hitachi Global Laser Enrichment LLC to build and operate a uranium enrichment plant near Wilmington deploying the laser technology instead of costlier centrifuges.

    Edwin Lyman, senior scientist with the Union of Concerned Scientists:

    We think the approval of the license was done without due consideration of proliferation. We’re already grappling with how to cope with Iran’s nuclear enrich capability” and the laser technology “could make the problem intractable and uncontrollable.
