WAToday.com.au reports Mega Uranium, a Canadian mining company, announced on Wednesday the WA Department of Mines and Petroleum had granted a mining lease for its Lake Maitland project, near Wiluna.

It is the first such venture to get the go-ahead since the ban on mining the radioactive material was overturned by the state’s Liberal-National government in November last year.

The company said in a statement production was set to commence in early 2012, after a definitive feasibility study scheduled for completion late next year.
