Environmental Activists Decry Copper-Nickel Mining in Minnesota
Minnesota Public Radio reported that this weekend an anti-mining group will open a new center in Ely, Minnesota. Its aim is to encourage tourists to urge President Obama to protect the area from copper-nickel mining; those in favor of the process believe it will bring jobs to the area.

Although the center’s organizers see mining as a major environmental threat, many in town believe it copper-nickel mining can be done safely and jumpstart the region’s economy.
[Center contributor Becky] Rom’s husband, Reid Carron, said some area residents are concerned that, when mines expose copper bearing sulfide ore to air and water, acidic runoff could pollute the Boundary Waters.
