Dominican Republic Bishops Support Ban on Xstrata Nickel’s Falcondo
Dominican Today reported that the Dominican Republic’s bishops are in favor of a recent Environment Ministry decision that bans Xstrata Nickel’s Falcondo ferronickel surface operation from mining at Loma Miranda.
Dominican Today reported that the Dominican Republic’s bishops are in favor of a recent Environment Ministry decision that bans Xstrata Nickel’s Falcondo ferronickel surface operation from mining at Loma Miranda.
As quoted in the market news:
In a statement of the Catholic bishops’ University Pastoral to mark World Environment Day, the religious leaders said they are satisfied with the decision to preserve the site.
‘The exploitation of this mining project would cause environmental damage on water sources, the unique natural resources present there, the enormous biological wealth, agriculture and livestock, human health and the quality of life,’ the statement says.
The bishops said Loma Miranda has the potential for ecotourism, recreational and educational environments and natural landscapes, ‘which the resources the Dominican government receives in exchange for mining Loma Miranda can never compensate.’
