Mineweb reported that the second underwater mining project proposed by Chatham Rock Phosphate Ltd. (NZE:CRP) has been rejected due to the potential environmental impact to the seabed.
According to the article:
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) refused Chatham Rock Phosphate’s application to extract phosphorite, a component used in fertilisers, from waters up to 450 metres deep and 450 kms (279 miles) off New Zealand’s South Island.
Chris Castle, managing director at Chatham Rock Phosphate, commented:
To say we are bitterly disappointed is an understatement. We are aghast.
