Gillard Rejects Greens Call to Close Coal Mines

Mining Weekly reported that Australia’s Prime Minister does not want to shut down coal mining operations in the country.

The federal government plans to introduce a carbon tax by mid-2012, with an emissions trading scheme expected within the following five years. The tax was expected to raise some A$11.5-billion during the first year.
