Average wage of diamond workers down by 30%

Times of India.com reports that the average wage earned by diamond workers at the largest diamond cutting and polishing centre in Surat has dropped by 30%, despite an increase in global demand for polished diamonds.

If the industry experts are to be believed, the situation will continue for another six months due to the severe shortage of rough diamonds. Reason: Depleting production of rough diamonds across the world, increasing costs of diamond exploration and the embargo by the Kimberley Process (KP) on the rough diamond exports from Zimbabwe.
