As quoted in the market news:

While permanent-magnet motors are the most popular type used in electric and hybrid drive systems — an estimated 90 percent of today’s electric vehicles use this design, said Kevin Riddell, an analyst with LMC Automotive — they are not the only workable design. Induction motors, for example, draw an electrical current to create the magnetic field that makes the motor’s shaft rotate.
