U.S. Bureau of Land Management Geologist and Mining Program Leader, Rick Deery, observed that the intellectual capacity of federal agencies that regulate mining and exploration is rapidly declining as the staff geologists, mineral examiners and other mining regulatory professionals are retiring. This situation is compounded by government budget cuts and low federal salaries, which send newly minted geologists and engineers fleeing to the private sector for much heftier pay.
