Fertilizer companies get hurt when crop prices fall because lower crop prices mean less income for farmers. When farmers feel the pinch, they cut back on what inputs they can do without, including fertilizer. While farmers must make debt payments for land and equipment, they can skimp on fertilizer when times are tight.
