Valens GroWorks Corp (CSE:VGW, OTC:MYMSF) has released its seventh episode on their Extraction podcast this week, which was recorded on location at the Lift & Co Expo in Vancouver. During the episode, the hosts interviewed horticulture expert Michael Williamson. He discussed the evolution of cannabis cultivation and what is needed to grow high-quality cannabis consistently in Canada.
The podcast covered Williamson’s views regarding indoor cultivation and how this can affect extraction. He explained that indoor cultivation can help create a consistent product, but it relies heavily on the available genetics. He also touched on the strict growing requirements that Canadian cultivators must meet and how good manufacturing practices (GMP) are being adopted in facilities across the US. However, Williamson also pointed out that high-quality cannabis is only part of the equation and that cultivators need to also focus on end users.
“A lot of cultivators base decisions off grower feedback…but growers may not be the [only] demographic,” said Williamson.
As to the future of Canadian cannabis cultivation, Williamson believes that licensed producers (LPs) and craft growers need to work together. To him, craft growers can provide LPs with cultivation practices that could help them produce a high-quality product quicker. He also wants to see more automation, advancements in tissue culture and the potential of drone-based integrated pest management brought to the industry.
“I think the future is some of the craft farmers [that] are holding on to some really unique genetics and they need to find a partnership,” said Williamson.
