“In the U.S., coal utilization has been down the last two years, mainly due to the economic downturn,” Govreau said. “Power generators are using less coal because there has been lower demand for electricity. About 50% of electricity in the U.S. is generated from coal. So when electric demand falls, coal goes with it. Also, industrial facilities like steel mills and automotive plants were hit hard by the Great Recession, and they are using less coal to generate their electricity.”
