Quebec Government Throws Support Behind Northern Resource Development
Mining Weekly reported that Quebec government has pledged financial support for a number of projects and infrastructure, but the Cree Nation of Eeyou Istchee is insisting on consultation and consideration of the impact on their community. Meanwhile, the government is still having to deal with outstanding regulatory issues, including companies waiting for permission to proceed with uranium projects.
As quoted in the Mining Weekly report:
Mining Weekly reported that Quebec government has pledged financial support for a number of projects and infrastructure, but the Cree Nation of Eeyou Istchee is insisting on consultation and consideration of the impact on their community. Meanwhile, the government is still having to deal with outstanding regulatory issues, including companies waiting for permission to proceed with uranium projects.
As quoted in the Mining Weekly report:
Despite this moratorium, federal regulators, including the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC), allowed Strateco’s Matoush project to proceed within this Cree territory. Nevertheless, before it could proceed, provincial authorisation was also required, for which Strateco had already been waiting for two years.
