Here’s a look at the world’s top 40 mining companies, as per PwC’s latest report.
Last month, PricewaterhouseCoopers put out its annual review of global trends in the mining industry. The report includes a list of the world’s top 40 mining companies in terms of market cap at the end of last year.
PwC noted that the mining sector has rebounded strongly in 2016 after recording a massive decline in 2015. Overall, the world’s top 40 mining companies lost 37 percent of their market cap over the course of the year. But those large ships are slowly turning around, with companies still maintaining cost cutting strategies to maximize value.
Meanwhile, the top 40 have bounced back alongside the rise in commodity prices this year, gaining 30 percent in market capitalization between January and April.
There were several notable changes to this year’s top 40 list:
- China rising; four new companies joined the list this year, all from China. One Chinese company dropped off the top 40, bringing the total number of Chinese companies on the list from 9 to 12
- AngloGold is back; For the first time since 2013, AngloGold was back on the top 40 list
- Missing in action; However, several other companies were absent from the list, notably First Quantum Minerals and Teck Resources
- Lithium makes the cut; China’s Sichuan Tianqi lithium joined the ranks of the top 40 this year, marking the first time a lithium company has made the cut.
