Highlights:

  • Galan strengthens Board with the appointment of South American based lithium executive Ms María Claudia Pohl Ibáñez.
  • Over 23 years’ senior executive experience at SQM, a world leader in the lithium industry
  • Current Managing Partner and General Manager at Ad-Infinitum, a Chilean based lithium process engineering consultancy
  • Ms Pohl will join the Galan Board at a critical juncture on its way to becoming a significant South American lithium producer
  • Chris Chalwell to retire from the Board

Claudia is an industrial civil industrial engineer with extensive experience in the lithium production industry. Until recently, she worked for world leader in the lithium industry Sociedad Química y Minera de Chile (NYSE:SQM, Santiago Stock Exchange: SQM-A, SQM-B) for 23 years, based in Santiago, Chile. During Claudia’s time at SQM, she held numerous senior leadership roles including overseeing lithium planning and studies and brings significant lithium project evaluation and operational experience whilst joining the Board at a critical juncture in Galan’s journey to becoming a significant South American lithium producer.

Since leaving SQM in late 2021, Claudia has been Managing Partner and General Manager of Chilean based Ad-Infinitum, a process engineering consultancy, with specific focus on lithium brine projects under study and development, and the associated project evaluations. Claudia will be remunerated in line with the existing Non-Executive Directors.

Mr Chris Chalwell, a founding Galan Non-Executive Director since February 2011, has done a mountain of work in building the Company and helping to get it into the strong position that it is in today. He has decided to retire as a Galan director on 31 May 2023 to align with his personal future endeavours. The Board wishes to sincerely thank Chris for his outstanding leadership and significant contribution to the Board and the Company over a number of years.

Commenting on the appointment, Galan’s Chairman, Mr Richard Homsany said:

“It is a great achievement for Galan to attract a person of the calibre of Ms. Claudia Pohl to its Board. She brings substantial, broad lithium brine experience to the table and has a real desire to make a positive difference. Claudia joins the Galan Board at a significant time on our way to becoming a producer and will bring a new and exciting perspective to the team. On behalf of the Board, I would also like to sincerely acknowledge and thank Mr Chris Chalwell for the significant and valued contribution he has made to the Board and the Company over more than a decade. He has helped build and grow the Company to achieve the successful position it enjoys today. We warmly wish Chris all the very best in his future endeavours.”

Commenting on her appointment, Ms Pohl said:

“I am truly honoured to be joining the Galan Board and at such an exciting point in Galan’s journey from early explorer to a pre-development future producer. I have watched Galan’s progress closely over the last several years and the Hombre Muerto resource that Galan has proved up, is truly world class and the envy of many in the industry. I look forward to joining my past SQM colleague Daniel Jimenez as well as Richard, JP and Terry in leading Galan towards becoming the next major lithium producer in South America.”

Types of Lithium Brine Deposits

The growing global adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) is driving lithium demand, and it’s important for investors interested in the battery metal to understand the different lithium deposit types found around the world.

Lithium is mined from three types of deposits: brines, pegmatites and sedimentary rocks. Global lithium reserves are estimated at 30 million metric tons (MT), and continental brines and pegmatites are the main sources for commercial production.

A University of Michigan study published in the Journal of Industrial Ecology explains, “The feasibility of recovering lithium economically from any deposit depends on the size of the deposit, its lithium content … the content of other elements and the processes that are used to remove the lithium-bearing material from the deposit and extract lithium from it.”

Lithium Market Update: Q1 2025 in Review

The global lithium market experienced a significant downturn during the first quarter of 2025, with some price segments falling to four year lows. Persistent oversupply and weaker-than-anticipated demand, particularly from the electric vehicle (EV) sector, prevented any market gains over the three month period.

After starting the year at a steady pace, the lithium carbonate CIF North Asia price fell below US$9,550 per metric ton in February, its lowest point since 2021. Its downward trend has triggered more production cuts and project delays among major producers, especially in Australia and China, as companies seek to balance the market.

With prices well off highs seen in 2021 and 2022, analysts are suggesting that these adjustments may signal a market bottom, with projections indicating a potential shift to a lithium supply deficit as early as 2026.
