CytoSorbents Receives Non-Dilutive Funding from the New Jersey Technology Business Tax Certificate Transfer Program
CytoSorbents Corporation announced the receipt of $315,551, net of transaction costs, in non-dilutive funding as an approved participant of the Technology Business Tax Certificate Transfer Program sponsored by the New Jersey Economic Development Authority.
CytoSorbents Corporation (NASDAQ: CTSO), a critical care immunotherapy leader commercializing its flagship CytoSorb® blood filter to treat deadly inflammation in critically-ill and cardiac surgery patients around the world, announced the receipt of $315,551, net of transaction costs, in non-dilutive funding as an approved participant of the Technology Business Tax Certificate Transfer Program sponsored by the New Jersey Economic Development Authority (NJEDA). Funds will be used to support sales of CytoSorb® internationally and for working capital purposes.
Dr. Phillip Chan, Chief Executive Officer of CytoSorbents stated, “These funds will help CytoSorbents continue its international mission to help save the lives of critically-ill and cardiac surgery patients suffering from deadly inflammation. We thank the NJEDA for their continued support of CytoSorbents under this NOL program, which totals more than $2 million in non-dilutive funding since we have been eligible. Overall, federal and state agencies have supported our company and technology with more than $20 million in non-dilutive funding through grants, contracts, and other sources. This represents tremendous validation of our technology and products, particularly when coupled with growing physician adoption and more than 17,000 CytoSorb treatments administered to date, and three major strategic partnerships with Fresenius Medical Care – the world’s largest dialysis company, Terumo Cardiovascular – a global leader in cardiac and vascular surgery, and Biocon – the largest biopharmaceutical company in India.”
The New Jersey Technology Business Tax Certificate Transfer Program enables approved Technology and Biotechnology Businesses with Net Operating Losses to sell their Unused Net Operating Loss Carryover (NOL) and Unused Research and Development Tax Credits (R&D Tax Credits) for at least 80% of the value of the tax benefits to a profitable corporate taxpayer in the State of New Jersey that is not an Affiliated Business. This allows Technology and Biotechnology Businesses with Net Operating Losses to turn their tax losses and credits into cash to buy equipment or facilities, or for other Allowable Expenditures. The New Jersey Economic Development Authority (NJEDA) determines eligibility, and the New Jersey Division of Taxation determines the value of the tax benefits (NOL and R&D Tax Credits).
About CytoSorbents Corporation (NASDAQ: CTSO)
CytoSorbents Corporation is a leader in critical care immunotherapy, specializing in blood purification. Its flagship product, CytoSorb® is approved in the European Union with distribution in 42 countries around the world, as a safe and effective extracorporeal cytokine adsorber, designed to reduce the “cytokine storm” or “cytokine release syndrome” that could otherwise cause massive inflammation, organ failure and death in common critical illnesses such as sepsis, burn injury, trauma, lung injury and pancreatitis, as well as in cancer immunotherapy. These are conditions where the risk of death is extremely high, yet no effective treatments exist. CytoSorb® is also being used during and after cardiac surgery to remove inflammatory mediators, such as cytokines and free hemoglobin, which can lead to post-operative complications, including multiple organ failure. CytoSorbents has completed its REFRESH (REduction in FREe Hemoglobin) 1 trial – a multi-center, randomized controlled study that has demonstrated the safety of intra-operative CytoSorb® use in a heart-lung machine during complex cardiac surgery. In 2017, the company plans to initiate a pivotal REFRESH 2 trial intended to support U.S. FDA approval. CytoSorb® has been used safely in more than 17,000 human treatments to date.
CytoSorbents’ purification technologies are based on biocompatible, highly porous polymer beads that can actively remove toxic substances from blood and other bodily fluids by pore capture and surface adsorption. Its technologies have received non-dilutive grant and contract funding in excess of $18 million from DARPA, the U.S. Army, the U.S. Air Force, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), U.S. Special Operations Command (SOCOM) and others. The Company has numerous products under development based upon this unique blood purification technology, protected by 32 issued U.S. patents and multiple applications pending, including CytoSorb-XL, HemoDefend™, ContrastSorb, DrugSorb, and others.
