Sarama Resources (TSXV:SWA, ASX:SRR) is a mineral exploration and development company focused on developing a new mining district in southwest Burkina Faso. Sarama Resources’ land package spans more than 1,900-square-kilometers across two 100-percent-owned projects, plus interest in a third project, a joint venture with Endeavour Mining Corp. The company's total attributable resource base exceeds three million ounces of contained gold.
Sarama's 100-percent-owned flagship Sanutura Project is a 1,450-square-kilometer late-stage exploration project located in the southern Houndé belt in Burkina Faso and contains approximately three million ounces of gold in resource, including over two million ounces of high-grade material grading more than 2 g/t gold and one million ounces of oxides within a pit shell. The project's large oxide and a free milling gold resource will allow a new mine to be financed and established using a simple CIL process flow sheet, lowering technical risk and upfront capital needs. Recent exploration drilling intersected new, shallow, high-grade mineralization outside the modelled resource within the central and southern areas of the Tankoro Deposit, with new downhole intersections including 21 meters @ 7.5g/t gold, 23 meters @ 4.26 g/t gold, 18 meters @ 3.63 g/t gold and 11 meters @ 4.33 g/t gold.
The company has recently completed 21,000 meters out of a planned 50,000-meter drilling program across multiple prospective targets on the Sanutura Project, with the aim of growing the pit-shell constrained oxide resource well through one million ounces of contained gold. The company is optimistic that mine development on the Sanutura Project will require relatively modest up-front capital expenditure and yield rapid payback with high margins through the formative years and ultimately culminating in a multi-faceted, long-life mining operation.
Sarama Resources' other projects in Burkina Faso include the Koumandara and Karankasso Projects. The 100-percent-owned Koumandara Project is an early exploration-stage project in the northern Banfora greenstone belt. Exploration has delineated +80 kilometers of gold anomaly with the largest gold anomaly spanning more than 35 kilometers in length and three to five kilometers in width. Scout drilling has encountered multiple high-grade gold occurrences including 4 meters @ 10.6 g/t gold and 7 meters @ 6.9 g/t gold in RC drilling, 10 g/t gold in auger drilling and 4 g/t gold in gold-in-soil sampling.
The Karankasso Project is a joint venture with Endeavour Mining and is an exploration-stage project which hosts 700,000 ounces of gold in resource and is adjacent to Sarama’s 100-percent-owned Sanutura Project.
Sarama Resources believes significant brownfields and greenfields exploration potential remains and with the project already of a size to support development, any new discovery will add incremental ounces that will ultimately drive high-margin resource growth and add to the project scale and life.
In addition to the exploration and development potential, there is also a significant consolidation opportunity to create a world-class asset by combining the Sanutura Project with the Karankasso Project JV and Endeavour Mining’s Bantou Project, which are all contiguous and together host more than five million ounces of gold.

The Sanutura Project is a 100-percent-owned, 1,450-square-kilometer near-term development project located approximately 350 kilometers southwest of Ouagadougou in the southern Houndé belt in Burkina Faso. The Houndé belt features many gold discoveries, including Endeavour Mining's 1.2-million-ounce Bantou Deposit, which is six kilometers from Sarama's Sanutura Project. The Sanutura Project hosts close to a three–million-ounce gold resource within the Tankoro and Bondi Deposits.
The Tankoro Deposit forms the major part of a regional-scale gold camp and is situated in a large mineralized corridor over 15 kilometers in length and up to 1.5 kilometers wide and has 0.6 million ounces of measured and indicated and 1.9 million ounces of inferred gold resources. The Bondi Deposit has an inferred gold resource of 0.5 million. The broader Sanutura Project area also contains numerous exploration targets including high-grade prospects at Zanawa and Bamako.
Sarama Resources commenced a +50,000-meter drill program at the Sanutura project in May 2022 and has so far intersected seven new areas of mineralization outside but proximal to the current mineral resource. The program also identified a significant new geological model targeting flat, high-grade oxide material. Sarama intends to follow up on the outstanding results from its current program that has been designed to materially increase the pit-shell constrained oxide resource, which currently sits around one million ounces of contained gold.
The fully owned Koumandara project is a 467-square-kilometer, early exploration-stage project located approximately 30 kilometers from Bobo-Dioulasso in the northern Banfora Greenstone belt in Burkina Faso. Banfora is relatively underexplored and is considered to be geologically similar to the Houndé belt. The Koumandara project benefits from excellent access to infrastructure and proximity to the regional power grid.
The property features a gold mineralized corridor that overlies a 45-kilometer-long section of a district-scale litho-structural break. To date, the company has identified +80 kilometers of strike length of gold-soil anomalies. Reconnaissance exploration on the Koumandara project intersected 10 g/t of gold in RC and auger drilling and 4 g/t of gold values in gold-in-soil geochemistry. Historical scout drilling on the property returned 4 meters at 10.6 g/t gold, 7 meters at 6.9 g/t gold, 15 meters at 1.8 g/t gold, 13 meters at 2.9 g/t gold, 17 meters at 1.2 g/t gold and 3 meters at 8.9 g/t gold.
The Karankasso project is a 750-square-kilometer exploration-stage project, located approximately 130 kilometers southwest of Endeavour Mining's Mana mine and Fortuna Silver's Yaramoko Mine. The Karankasso project is also located approximately 60 kilometers south of Endeavour Mining's Houndé mine and is adjacent to Sarama Resources' Sanutura project. The project is a joint venture with Endeavour Mining where Sarama Resources owns approximately 18 percent interest.
The property features mostly narrow quartz vein mineralization. In 2020, the mineral resource estimate on the property was 12.74 million tonnes at 1.73 g/t for 709,000 ounces of gold, of which Sarama's equity share is 130,000 ounces. The Karankasso project has also returned high-grade hits including 21 meters at 14.6 g/t in the Tiébe zone.
The Karankasso project is operated by Endeavour Mining which is currently reviewing and upgrading historical exploration as well as conducting follow-up work. The operator is focused on exploring the full 50-kilometer-long corridor that has been identified through drilling, soil anomalies and artisanal workings.
Andrew Dinning is a founder, managing director and CEO of Sarama Resources Ltd. Dinning is committed to development in Africa and recently retired as a board member of The Australia-Africa Minerals and Energy Group (AAMEG) after eight years of service. Whilst at Moto Goldmines, he led the exploration team that took the Moto gold deposit from discovery to bankable feasibility. The Moto gold deposit was later sold to Randgold Resources and AngloGold Ashanti in October 2009.
Paul Schmiede is a major shareholder and the vice president of corporate development at Sarama Resources Ltd. He is a mining engineer with over 25 years of experience in mining and exploration. Before joining Sarama Resources in 2010, Schmiede was vice president of operations and project development at Moto Goldmines Ltd. At Moto Goldmine, he managed the pre-feasibility, bankable and definitive feasibility study for the more than 22 million-ounce Democratic Republic of Congo-based Moto Gold Project (now Kibali Gold). Whilst at Moto Goldmines, he also managed the in-country environment, community studies and pre-construction activities. Evangelista held the positions of group financial controller and acting CFO at Anvil Mining Ltd. which operated 3 mines in the DRC. He was an integral part of the senior management team that saw Anvil's market capitalization grow from C$100 million in 2005 to C$1.3 billion upon takeover by Minmetals in 2012.
Evangelista holds a Bachelor of Business in Accounting degree, a graduate diploma in business administration and a graduate diploma in applied corporate governance.
Guy Scherrer is the exploration manager for Sarama Resources Ltd. in Mali and Burkina Faso. Scherrer has over 15 years of experience working as an exploration geologist in Canada, DRC, the Republic of Congo, Guinea, Burkina Faso and Mali. Cosmo Newbery Project
The Project is comprised of 7 contiguous exploration tenements covering approximately 580km² in the Eastern Goldfields of Western Australia, approximately 85km north-east of Laverton and 95km west of the world-class Gruyere Gold Mine. The Project is readily accessible via the Great Central Road which services the Cosmo Newbery Community.
The Project captures one of the last unexplored greenstone belts in Western Australia and with a strike length of +50km, the Cosmo Newbery Belt represents a large and prospective system with gold first being discovered in the area in the 1890's. Multiple historical gold workings are documented within the Project area and work undertaken to date has identified multiple exploration targets for follow up.
Despite this significant prospectivity, the Project has seen virtually no modern explorationor drilling of merit due to a lack of land access persisting over a significant period. As a result, the Project has not benefited from the evolution of geochemical and geophysical techniques which now facilitate effective exploration in deeply weathered and complex regolith settings which is particularly pertinent given approximately 75% of the Project area is under cover.
Following the relatively recent securing of land access, the Project is now available for systematic and modern-day exploration programs to be conducted on a broad-scale. It is anticipated that future exploration programs will initially follow-up preliminary targets generated from regional soil sampling and limited reconnaissance drilling programs, a majority of which extended to approximately 5m below surface with a small percentage extending up to 30m below surface.
Transaction & Joint Venture Summary
Pursuant to the binding Asset Sale and Purchase Agreement executed by Sarama and a 100%-owned subsidiary with Cosmo Gold Limited ("Cosmo") and Adelong Gold Limited ("Adelong"), Sarama has acquired an initial 80% of Cosmo's interest in the Project (the "Transaction").
An unincorporated joint venture has been formed between Sarama (via its subsidiary) and Cosmo on industry-standard terms to advance exploration on the Project, with the initial participating interests being 80% Sarama and 20% Cosmo. The joint venture structure will ensure continuity of exploration and Traditional Owner relationships and provide for transfer of technical knowledge for the benefit of the Project. Under the terms of the joint venture, Sarama has been appointed as operator and will assume sole responsibility for funding all activities on the Project up to the point of a ‘Decision to Mine' being made. Within a 2-year period following completion of the Transaction, Sarama has, subject to the prior approval of TSX Venture Exchange ("TSX-V"), the right to acquire the remainder of Cosmo's interest in the Project for consideration of A$1,250,000, payable in cash or shares at Sarama's election. In the event the right is not exercised, the parties will continue under the established joint venture relationship. Upon a ‘Decision to Mine' being made, the parties will be required to contribute to joint venture costs in proportion to their participating interests. In the event a party does not contribute its share of proportional joint venture costs, the participating interest of that party shall be diluted according to an industry standard formula and if a party's interest is diluted to 10% or less, that party's interest shall be automatically converted to a 0.5% net smelter return royalty and the non-diluting party shall have a 100% interest.

The Asset Sale & Purchase Agreement in relation to Sarama, via a 100%-owned subsidiary, acquiring an interest in the Project is dated 12 August 2024, was fully executed 13 August 2024 and disseminated on TSX-V newswire services on 13 August 2024 and on the Australian Securities Exchange ("ASX") platform on 14 August 2024. The Transaction is being conducted at arm's length and no Finders' Fees are payable.
In consideration for Sarama, via a 100%-owned subsidiary, acquiring an initial 80% interest of Cosmo's interest in the Project, Sarama has made the following payments:
Cash consideration payment of A$100,000 to Cosmo;
Issuance to Adelong, as directed by Cosmo, of 25,000,000 Chess Depository Instruments ("CDIs") in Sarama and 7,500,000 options (exercisable at A$0.05/option for a period of 2-years after issue and converting to Sarama CDIs at a rate of 1:1) to settle and fully release Cosmo from indebtedness to Adelong;
Cash payments for project-related expenses of: approximately A$76,000 to various governmental agencies in connection with mineral tenure fees; approximately A$139,000 to various mining services suppliers in connection with soil geochemistry works; and approximately A$112,000 to Native Title groups in connection with land access agreement fees.

Sarama, via its 100%-owned subsidiary, has acquired from Cosmo an 80% interest in all the Project's Exploration Licences, with the exception of E38/2274 for which Sarama has acquired an effective 60% interest (with Cosmo retaining a 15% interest and an existing joint tenement holder retaining a 25% interest). The tenements in which Sarama has acquired an 80% interest account for approximately 80% of the total area of the Project. Tranche 1 of the Placement raised aggregate gross proceeds of A$2,000,000 with the Company issuing 66,666,666 Chess Depository Instruments ("CDIs") at an issue price of A$0.03 per CDI. Each new CDI issued under the Placement will rank equally with existing CDIs on issue and each CDI will represent a beneficial interest in one common share of the Company. Tranche 2 of the Placement will consist of 16,666,666 free attaching unlisted options (each a "Placement Option") and 14,000,000 broker options (each a "Broker Option" and together with the Placement Options, the "Options"), with each Option exercisable at A$0.09 and expiring on 30 November 2028. The Placement was issued to institutional and other sophisticated and professional investors pursuant to the shareholder approval obtained at Sarama's annual general meeting held on 11 September 2024.
Funds raised from the Placement will be used for exploration activities, general working capital purposes and for general and administration costs. None of the proceeds from the Placement will be used for payments to non-arm's length parties or persons conducting investor relations activities. A management corporate fee and broker commission of A$120,000 was paid to Ventnor Capital Pty Ltd in connection with the closing of Tranche 1 of the Placement.
Proceeds from the Placement will not be used to fund fees and expenses related to the Company's damages claim in respect of an investment dispute with Burkina Faso, which is subject to arbitration proceedings. These costs are fully funded via a A$6.7m non-recourse loan facility (refer to Sarama's news release dated 24 October 2024).
The Placement remains subject to the final approval of the TSX Venture Exchange ("TSXV"). The CDIs issued under Tranche 1 of the Placement were not subject to any TSXV hold periods as all subscribers under Tranche 1 of the Placement were located outside of Canada.
Members of Sarama's Board and Management did not subscribe for any CDIs in the Placement; however, concurrent with the Placement and subject to exchange and shareholder approval, the Company's executives and non-executive directors intend to receive a portion of their deferred salaries and director fees, in an aggregate amount of approximately A$394,000, in CDIs of the Company (the "Compensation Securities"). In September 2023, the Company's executives and non-executive directors agreed to suspend the payment of salaries and fees to ensure the Company had sufficient financial resources to work through the period of uncertainty created by the illegal withdrawal of the Company's rights to the Tankoro 2 exploration permit in Burkina Faso in August 2023. The Company intends to issue the Compensation Securities at the same price as the Placement (however, attaching options will no longer be included).

Funds raised will be used to undertake exploration activities, general administration and for general working capital purposes. The Placement was well supported by existing shareholders and professional and sophisticated investors.
The Placement will comprise the issue of up to 66,666,666 Chess Depository Interests ("CDIs") at an issue price of A$0.03 per CDI to raise gross proceeds of up to A$2 million. The issue price represents a ~15% discount to Sarama's 10-day VWAP and a 21% discount to the last traded CDI price on the Australian Securities Exchange ("ASX") on Monday, 18 November 2024 of A$0.038 and a ~24% discount to Sarama's 10-day VWAP and a 7% discount to the last traded share price on the TSX Venture Exchange ("TSXV") on Friday, 15 November 2024 of C$0.03. Each new CDI issued under the Placement will rank equally with existing CDIs on issue and each CDI will represent a beneficial interest in 1 common share of the Company. The Placement CDIs will be issued pursuant to the shareholder approval obtained at the annual general meeting.
Subject to the receipt of shareholder approval, Sarama will issue 1 free attaching unlisted option ("Placement Option") for every 4 new CDIs issued pursuant to the Placement. Each Placement Option will be exercisable at A$0.09 and will expire on 30 November 2028.
Australian resources brokers, Ventnor Securities Pty Ltd and RM Capital will act as Advisor and Lead Manager for the Placement and will receive up to 14,000,000 broker options, depending on quantum of funds raised, ("Broker Options") at an exercise price of A$0.09 each and expiring on 30 November 2028. Ventnor Securities Pty Ltd will also receive a capital raising fee of 6% of funds raised. The issue of the Broker Options is subject to shareholder approval.
The Placement is comprised of two tranches:
Tranche 1 consists of 66,666,666 new CDIs which will be issued pursuant to the approval granted by shareholders at the annual general meeting held on 11 September 2024. The Company expects to complete allotment of the new CDIs under Tranche 1 by 27 November 2024.
Tranche 2 consists of up to 16,666,666 Placement Options and up to 14,000,000 Broker Options which are subject to shareholder approval at a special meeting of shareholders anticipated to be held in late January 2025 ("Special Meeting"). No funds will be received from Tranche 2.
The Placement remains subject to the approval of the TSXV.
Members of Sarama's Board and Management do not intend to subscribe for any CDIs in the Placement, however concurrent with the Placement the Company's executives and non-executive directors have agreed to receive a portionof their deferred salaries and director fees, in an aggregate amount of A$393,981.18 in common shares or CDIs of the Company.

Pursuant to the requirements of the TSXV, the Company has sought approval to implement this shares-for-debt arrangement to issue up to 13,132,706 shares (CDIs) and 3,283,174 warrants (options) to the executives and non-executive directors. Cosmo Newbery Project
The Project is comprised of 7 contiguous exploration tenements covering approximately 580km² in the Eastern Goldfields of Western Australia, approximately 85km north-east of Laverton and 95km west of the world-class Gruyere Gold Mine. The Project is readily accessible via the Great Central Road which services the Cosmo Newbery Community.
The Project captures one of the last unexplored greenstone belts in Western Australia and with a strike length of +50km, the Cosmo Newbery Belt represents a large and prospective system with gold first being discovered in the area in the 1890's. Multiple historical gold workings are documented within the Project area and work undertaken to date, has identified multiple exploration targets for follow up.
Despite this significant prospectivity, the Project has seen virtually no modern exploration or drilling of merit due to a lack of land access persisting over a significant period. As a result, the Project has not benefited from the evolution of geochemical and geophysical techniques which now facilitate effective exploration in deeply weathered and complex regolith settings which is particularly pertinent given approximately 75% of the Project area is under cover.
Following the relatively recent securing of land access, the Project is now available for systematic and modern-day exploration programs to be conducted on a broad-scale. It is anticipated that future exploration programs will initially follow-up preliminary targets generated from regional soil sampling and limited reconnaissance drilling programs, a majority of which extended to approximately 5m below surface with a small percentage extending up to 30m below surface.

Transaction Progress
Pursuant to the binding Asset Sale and Purchase Agreement executed (on 12 August 2024) by Sarama, and a 100%-owned subsidiary, with Cosmo and Adelong Gold Limited ("Adelong"), Sarama will acquire 80% of Cosmo's interest in the Project (the "Transaction") and will be granted the right to acquire the remainder of Cosmo's interest in the Project within a 2-year period post completion(1). Further, an existing debt obligation of Cosmo to Adelong will be satisfied and discharged as part of the Transaction. Refer Sarama news release 13 August 2024 for further details.
Since the execution of a memorandum of understanding and the binding agreement Sarama and Cosmo have been working to satisfy the conditions precedent to enable completion of the Transaction.
Sarama has successfully gained regulatory approval for the Transaction from the Australian Securities Exchange ("ASX") and conditional approval from the TSX Venture Exchange ("TSX-V"). Final TSX-V approval for completion of the transaction is anticipated once various compliance items are filed. The Transaction has enjoyed support from the shareholders of both Sarama and Cosmo shareholders.
Sarama and Cosmo have been jointly working on the maintenance of the mineral tenure for the 7 exploration licences comprising the Project. These efforts have culminated in the extension of several licences for new terms and receipt of recent advice from the Western Australian Department of Energy, Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety has confirmed that all tenements are current and in good standing.
Introductions to the Traditional Owners of lands within the Project area have been made and these groups are supportive of Sarama's involvement in the Project, which will be confirmed with the procedural assignment of access agreements closer to the time of completion of the Transaction.
Cosmo has generated valuable base level data that has identified a number of target areas including kilometre-scale gold-in-soil anomalies and multiple structural and geophysical targets. Soil geochemistry exploration programs have commenced in regional areas and are expected to provide first-pass, broad-scale coverage in prospective but underexplored areas. It is anticipated that results from this initial program will inform design of expanded soil geochemistry programs to be undertaken post completion of the Transaction that will ultimately feed into drilling targeting. Whilst Sarama's exploration focus is gold, the Project is prospective for other commodities including nickel and rare earth elements, for which soil anomalism at a kilometre-scale has been already identified.

Upon completion of the Transaction, Sarama, via its 100%-owned subsidiary, will acquire from Cosmo an 80% interest in all the Project's Exploration Licences, with the exception of E38/2274 for which Sarama will acquire an effective 60% interest (with Cosmo retaining a 15% interest and an exisitng joint tenement holder retaining a 25% interest). Paves the Way for Lodgement of Substantial Damages Claim

The Dispute pertains to the illegal withdrawal of the Company's rights to the Tankoro 2 Exploration Permit (the "Permit") (refer news release 5 September 2023). The Permit covered the Tankoro Deposit which was the focal point of the Company's Sanutura Project (the "Project") which featured a multi-million ounce gold resource.
Litigation Funding Agreement
The LFA provides a four-year non-recourse loan facility ("Facility") of US$4.4 million to the Company to cover all fees and expenses related to its Claim to Arbitration (the "Claim").
Security of the Facility is limited to the Claim, associated potential proceeds and all benefits arising from the property and assets of the subsidiary companies comprising the ownership chain (the "Chain") pertaining to the Project (refer Annual Information Form, 2 April 2024). The Facility has been structured to enable the Company to continue to operate and consolidate its business outside the Chain without encumbrance or lien from the LFA.
All monies advanced through the Facility are non-recourse and repayable only in the event of a successful Claim or settlement of the Dispute that results in the receipt of Proceeds ("Proceeds") by the Company or in the event of a default by Sarama under the LFA. In the event of the occurrence of a material adverse change under the LFA, the Funder shall be entitled to recover only those funds which were advanced but remain unspent. The Funder's return is directly tied to the successful award and settlement of the Claim, with the total amount payable being a function of time and total Proceeds receipted. The priorities for distribution of receipted Proceeds are set out in the LFA and where commercially and legally sensitive, shall remain confidential.
If there is no settlement or award (or no default by Sarama under the LFA), the Company does not have an obligation to repay the loan. A detailed budget has been approved as part of the LFA, which covers all expected legal and ancillary costs associated with the arbitration process.
Plans for Arbitration
On 29 November 2023, the Company issued a Notice of Intent to Submit Claims to Arbitration under a bilateral investment treaty between Canada and Burkina Faso. The Government of Burkina Faso did not respond substantively to the Company's efforts to reach an amicable resolution of the dispute. With funding to support legal costs secured, the Company is now preparing to lodge a Request for Arbitration with the World Bank's International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes ("ICSID"). The Company will seek full compensation for the loss suffered which may include, but will not be limited to, the value of the Permit, the value of the Company's historic investments in the Project, the value of the Project at the time the Permit was withdrawn and damages the Company has suffered as a direct result of the Government's actions. The Project hosted a multi-million-ounce gold resource which was the subject of a substantially complete Preliminary Economic Assessment and fast-tracked development study at the time of the Government's illegal actions.
The Company has engaged Boies Schiller Flexner (UK) LLP ("BSF"), a leading international law firm, to assist with legal matters pertaining to the dispute (refer news release 17 October 2023). Background to Claim
On 31 August 2023, the Company received notification from the Minister of Energy, Mines and Quarries of Burkina Faso (the "Minister") that the Company's application for the Permit, received in August 2021 and granted to Sarama in November 2021 had been purportedly "rejected", even though the previous Minister had approved the Permit in accordance with the applicable laws nearly two years prior.
On 6 September 2023, during his public presentation at the Africa Down Under Mining Conference in Perth, the Minister, Simon-Pierre Boussim, stated that the Permit was available for purchase. Based on the notification from the Minister and his subsequent actions, the Company was forced to interpret the Minister's letter of 25 August 2023 as withdrawing the Company's rights to the Permit. The Minister did not respond to subsequent correspondence from the Company on the matter.
The unlawful withdrawal of the Permit by the Minister, resulting in the removal of the rights to the land conferred thereunder, has rendered the Project valueless to Sarama, consequently destroying the value of the Company's investment in the Project.

The gold price began Q4 at US$2,660.30, but quickly saw a retraction to US$2,608.40 on October 9. However, the decline didn't last, and gold again rose, setting a new record high of US$2,785.40 on October 30.
The surge upward was fueled by a weaker-than-expected September US consumer price index report, which showed annual inflation of 2.4 percent and monthly inflation of 0.2 percent. These numbers were higher than analysts' forecasts of 2.3 and 0.1 percent, raising expectations that the Fed would cut rates at its November meeting.
Gold was in retreat to start November, dropping to US$2,664 on November 6 after Trump’s victory. The next day, it briefly surged above the US$2,700 mark as the Fed cut interest rates by 25 basis points on November 7.
By November 15, the price of gold had fallen to its quarterly low of US$2,562.50.
The end of the month saw gold leap to US$2,715.80 on November 22. Following this peak, gold entered December below the US$2,700 mark, closing at US$2,660.50 on December 9.

Geopolitical impacts have been important to gold in Q4.
In addition to Trump's re-election, which has caused turmoil in various forms, on November 17 the US authorized Ukraine to use ATACMS long-range missiles to attack targets deeper into Russian territory. The UK and France mirrored this move, giving Ukraine the green light to use long-range missiles in the ongoing conflict.
Tensions continued to ratchet up in the days following as Russia announced it was lowering the threshold for nuclear retaliation to include conventional attacks from countries backed by nuclear nations. In a demonstration of its capabilities, Russia launched an intermediate-range ballistic missile for the first time on November 21. While the missile appeared only to carry inert warheads, it is capable of delivering both conventional and nuclear armaments.
The threat of a significant escalation has bolstered gold’s appeal as a safe-haven asset and store of value.
Gold set its first record price of the year at US$2,251.37 on March 31.
Central bank buying, notably China's purchase of 22 metric tons of gold in the first two months of the year, supported the price. Turkey, Kazakhstan and India also significantly increased their holdings at the start of the year.
Further momentum came from Chinese wholesale demand, which jumped to 271 metric tons in January, the strongest ever recorded. Investors were turning to the yellow metal as a defense against falling real estate and stock prices. At that time, the country's stocks had lost nearly US$5 trillion in value over the past three years.

“As central banks continue to be significant buyers and geopolitical risks and global uncertainties drive investors towards the perceived safety of gold, the current environment underscores gold’s importance as a strategic asset for portfolio diversification and risk mitigation. Therefore, while there may have been a perception of western disinterest in gold, recent developments indicate a sustained and broad-based demand for the precious metal,” Joe Cavatoni, market strategist, Americas, told the Investing News Network (INN) in an email at the time.
The gold price saw increasing momentum in Q2, setting a new all-time of US$2,450.05 on May 20.
Gains through the quarter were influenced by strong central bank demand. Investor sentiment toward the yellow metal also shifted, with outflows from western exchange-traded funds starting to slow.
Although European funds still saw significant declines, it wasn’t all bad news — the US-based SPDR Gold Shares (NYSE:GLD), the Sprott Physical Gold Trust (NYSE:PHYS), Ireland’s Royal Mint Responsibly Sourced Physical Gold ETC (LSE:RMAU) and Switzerland’s UBS ETF Gold (SWX:AUUSI) all saw increases.

In a May interview with INN, Jeff Clark, editor of Paydirt Prospector, noted several other market dynamics that caused the price of gold to rise dramatically. He said the real starting point for the precious metal's gains was the end of February, when the Fed indicated it was expecting three or four rate cuts in 2024.
“All of a sudden, gold was off to the races. It jumped so high that suddenly, you had some short covering that needed to happen then as well. So you had short covering, which means they’re buying. And then you had momentum chasers and traders jumping all in. That was a pretty good spike ... that's what kind of started all of this,” he said.
Gold set another record price during the third quarter, reaching US$2,672.51 on September 26.
The high came just a week after the conclusion of the Fed's September meeting, when it announced a jumbo 50 basis point cut to the federal funds rate. While the People’s Bank of China maintained its pause on gold purchases in the third quarter, it granted several regional banks new import quotas in August.

David Barrett, CEO of the UK division of global brokerage firm EBC Financial Group, suggested at the time that Fed rate cuts were less of a factor for gold than central bank buying. “I still see the global central bank buying as the main driver — as it has been over the last 15 years. This demand removes supply from the market. They are the ultimate buy-and-hold participants and have been buying massive amounts,” he told INN via email.
The quarter also saw significant merger and acquisition activity, with South Africa-based Gold Fields (NYSE:GFI,JSE:GFI) announcing plans to acquire Canada’s Osisko Mining (TSX:OSK) for C$2.16 billion, and South African gold miner AngloGold Ashanti (NYSE:AU) agreeing to purchase UK-based Centamin (TSX:CEE,LSE:CEY) for US$2.5 billion.
Overall, uncertainty has been a key driver for gold in 2024.
Central banks have continued to increase their physical holdings against an increasingly polarized political landscape. The most recent data from the World Gold Council shows that they added 186 metric tons of gold to their coffers during the third quarter, with the National Bank of Poland leading the way with 42 metric tons.
The World Gold Council notes that on a rolling four-quarter basis, central bank buying has slowed to 909 metric tons — that's compared to 1,215 metric tons one year ago.
Investors also began returning to the precious metal throughout 2024 as geopolitical tensions and fragile economies pushed them toward gold as a safe haven to help shield their portfolios from volatility.
With the world’s largest economy set to welcome Trump back to the White House in 2025, there are many unknowns. His economic policies could cause inflation to begin creeping up. In contrast, his foreign policies could create new ripples through global trade and financial markets given that he campaigned on more protectionist policies.

The price of gold stays strong. In April 2024, the yellow metal’s price passed US$2,400 per ounce for the first time. The reason is multifaceted. The world teeters on the brink of a severe recession while some markets attribute the increase to safe haven rush. Amidst ballooning interest rates, bank failures and falling bond yields, demand for gold continues to rise. At this precise moment, gold is simultaneously an excellent portfolio diversifier and a compelling hedge against ongoing inflation — particularly if one invests in the right company.
Brightstar Resources (ASX:BTR) aims to be that company. An emerging mining and development company, Brightstar occupies a strategic land position of roughly 1,200 square kilometers in the Sandstone Greenstone Belt, 300 square kilometers in the Laverton Tectonic Belt and 80 square kilometers of the Menzies Shear Zone.
The company also owns an existing processing facility that can potentially provide tremendous shareholder value in a low-capital cost restart scenario.
That plant, once fully refurbished and operational, could prove a key differentiator for the company, enabling fast gold production at a low capital cost. This is especially noteworthy given that many other gold companies trading on the ASX are largely focused on greenfield exploration and development. Even once those companies discover a promising resource, mining and processing facilities would still need to be built, undertakings which can incur significant upfront capital costs and take several years.
Brightstar's Laverton gold assets are all centered on a 100 percent-owned 300-square-kilometer tenure in the Laverton Tectonic Zone and all within 70 kilometers of the Laverton Processing Plant. Additionally, all resources within this zone are open along strike and at depth. Only minor drilling programs have been conducted in recent years, paving the way for significant exploration upside with the potential for further regional and greenfields discoveries.
Brightstar also owns 100 percent of the Menzies Gold Project, a contiguous land package of granted mining leases over a strike length of roughly 20 kilometers along the Menzies Shear Zone and adjacent to the Goldfields Highway.
In 2023 and 2024, the company announced a mineral resource upgrade to the Cork Tree Well deposit (Laverton gold project) and also delivered two maiden mineral resource estimates at the Link Zone and Aspacia deposits (Menzies gold project). This has grown the total group MRE by approximately 150 koz gold through organic exploration.
The company has also acquired 100 percent of the shares and options of Linden Gold Alliance, a gold producer, developer and explorer with existing mineral resources of 350 koz @ 2.1 g/t gold near Brightstar in the Laverton district. Brightstar’s MRE has reached 1.1 Moz gold across the Menzies and Laverton projects, with an additional 0.35 Moz gold in resources added after the successful acquisition of Linden Gold Alliance.
In August 2024, Brightstar entered into a scheme implementation deed to acquire 100 percent of Alto Metals (ASX:AME), which owns the Sandstone gold project located in East Murchison. The project has a current mineral resource of 1.05 Moz of gold at 1.5 g/t.
Brightstar also completed the acquisition of the gold rights at the Montague East gold project (MEGP) from Gateway Mining Limited (ASX:GML). The project is located 70 km from the Sandstone gold project. The acquisition adds a further 9.6 Mt @ 1.6 g/t gold for 0.5 Moz gold to Brightstar’s JORC Mineral Resource Estimate, giving the company a total mineral endowment of 38.3 Mt @ 1.6 g/t gold for 2.0 Moz gold.
The acquisition of the MGEP from Gateway Mining and 100 percent of Alto’s shares creates a third district-scale resource base for the company called the Sandstone Hub. Upon consolidation of the Laverton, Menzies and Sandstone hubs, Brightstar’s mineral resources would reach 3 Moz at 1.5g/t gold.
Subsequent to the deal with Alto Metals, Brightstar entered into a $4 million drill-for-equity agreement with Topdrill to aggressively advance the consolidated Sandstone gold project. The deal strengthens Brightstar's financial capacity to fulfill its multi-hub exploration and development strategy, which includes the Menzies, Laverton and Sandstone hubs.
Brightstar’s Laverton hub is comprised of the Cork Tree Well, Beta and Alpha project areas with the addition of the Second Fortune gold mine and the Jasper Hills projects.
The Menzies Hub comprises a tenement holding of a contiguous land package of granted mining leases over a strike length of more than 20 km. The majority of deposits hosted along the Menzies Shear Zone are located adjacent to Goldfields Highway in Menzies (130km north of Kalgoorlie).
The consolidated Sandstone project is over 100 km from existing third-party milling operations in the Murchison. This third processing hub boasts Alto’s Sandstone project with a mineral resource of 1.05 Moz at 1.4 g/t gold and Gateway’s Montague gold project with a mineral resource of 0.5 Moz @ 1.6 g/t gold.
