Potash chief executive Bill Doyle told the Financial Post BHP could not make the numbers work on the Jansen development, a project that will take BHP into a new industry. It is a project BHP has pursued with vigour since failing in its $40bn bid for Potash in 2010 after hitting political roadblocks.
