Ioneer’s lithium project reaches key milestone, on track for production in 2026

ioneer Ltd. (ASX:INR,NASDAQ: IONR) has reached a significant milestone in the development of its Rhyolite Ridge Lithium-Boron project in Esmeralda County, Nevada, progressing through the final stages of federal permitting, the first US lithium development project to reach this stage under the Biden administration, the Washington Examiner has reported.

This key milestone sets the company on track to commence production by 2026, in light of soaring demand for lithium which could reach up to 5 million by 2030.

"We understand the Rhyolite Ridge Project is the first lithium project to be issued a Notice of Intent under the Biden administration and we see this as a significant step toward ensuring a strong domestic supply of critical minerals and strategic materials necessary for development of a domestic battery supply chain essential to the electrification of transportation in the US,” Ioneer CEO James Calaway said in a statement.

The Rhyolite Ridge lithium-boron deposit is the only known lithium-boron deposit in North America and one of only two known deposits in the world, according to the article. The project’s definitive feasibility study is modeled on a 26-year mine life and is fully funded to a final investment decision.

Top 9 Lithium-producing Countries (Updated 2024)

Interest in lithium continues to grow due to its role in the lithium-ion batteries that power electric vehicles (EVs). As a result, more and more attention is landing on the top lithium-producing countries.

About 80 percent of the lithium produced globally goes toward battery production, but other industries also consume the metal. For example, 7 percent of lithium is used in ceramics and glass, while 4 percent goes to lubricating greases.

According to the US Geological Survey, lithium use in batteries has increased in recent years due to the use of rechargeable batteries in portable electronic devices, as well as in electric tools, EVs and grid storage applications.
