BriaCell's Cell-Based ‘Melanoma’ Enters the Skin Cancer Vaccine Conversation

Clinical-stage immuno-oncology company BriaCell Therapeutics (TSX:BCT,NASDAQ:BCTX) has achieved a “key genetic engineering milestone” with ‘Melanoma’, its personalized whole-cell melanoma immunotherapy vaccine candidate.

The achievement allows the vaccine’s program to proceed towards clinical development, catching the eye of healthcare publication Inside Precision Medicine.

In an article, Inside Precision Medicine described BriaCell as an “underdog” in the personalized cancer vaccine wave. The comparison stems from Merck and Moderna's Phase 3 trial results, which sent both pharmaceutical giants' stocks climbing after their personalized mRNA vaccine demonstrated significant strength in preventing melanoma recurrence.

BriaCell is seen to be chasing the same opportunity from a different angle.

“Bria-MEL+ is designed to combine the advantages of personalized immunotherapy with the accessibility of an off-the-shelf vaccine,” said President and CEO William V. Williams, MD, in a company announcement. “By eliminating individualized manufacturing, we believe this approach has the potential to broaden access, shorten treatment timelines, and reduce treatment costs while preserving patient-specific matching.”

Melanoma cases in 2026 are estimated at 112,000 by the American Cancer Society. Data from the National Library of Medicine also revealed that melanoma makes up about 1.7 percent of global cancer diagnoses and is the fifth most common cancer in the US, highlighting the importance of skin cancer treatments and vaccines.

What separates BriaCell’s approach is how its personalized immunotherapy platform is built on whole-cell immunotherapy. The company’s portfolio is led by Bria-IMT, a patented, off-the-shelf and targeted immunotherapy for metastatic breast cancer. It is also advancing Bria-OTS in breast cancer, where early results showed that the first patient saw a sustained resolution of lung metastasis.

BriaCell’s approach draws on earlier groundwork laid by Bria-OTS+, with broad immune activation as the scientific backbone informing how Bria-MEL+ is being developed for melanoma.
