NextSource Materials Initiates Technical Study for 150,000 TPA Phase 2 Expansion of Molo Graphite Mine and Initiation of Research Coverage by Cormark Securities

NextSource Materials Inc. (TSX:NEXT) (OTCQB:NSRCF) ("NextSource" or the "Company") announces the commencement of a technical study for a Phase 2 production capacity of at least 150,000 tonnes per annum ("tpa") of SuperFlake® for its Molo Graphite Mine in Madagascar. This is a significant increase from our 2019 Feasibility Study ("FS") that considered a Phase 2 capacity of only 45,000 tpa

The new minimum targeted capacity was determined after recent discussions with our flake graphite offtake partners and with our partnership for the construction of a battery anode facility ("BAF") to produce spheronized and purified graphite ("SPG"). The purpose of the technical study is to determine the project economics pertaining to this increase in targeted production for Phase 2.

Battery shortage is a major risk to the burgeoning electric car era. Security of supply of critical materials that go into these batteries is at the top of the agenda for governments around the world.

NextSource is well positioned to become a significant producer of graphite and a strategic supplier of battery anode material necessary to support the electric vehicle revolution, providing a fully integrated graphite product from "the mine to the battery". Construction of Phase 1 of the Molo mine is currently in progress. Construction of Phase 2 expansion is expected to begin after completion of Phase 1. Construction of the BAF is expected to begin in 2022 and the Company is currently in discussions with its offtake partners as to the initial production capacity of the facility.

The commencement of formal coverage by Cormark coincides with NextSource having completed several major development milestones:

1. Secured US$29.5 million to Fully Fund Phase 1 of Molo Graphite Mine and Key Technical Studies

On February 8, 2021, the Company announced a US$29.5 million strategic investment by Vision Blue Resources, a newly created battery commodity/resource-focused private investment company founded by Sir Mick Davis. The first private placement was completed on March 15, 2021, and the second private placement was completed on May 19, 2021. The royalty is expected to close by the end of June 2021. The Vision Blue financing package is sufficient to fully fund construction of Phase 1 of the Molo Graphite Mine, the technical study for the Phase 2 Molo expansion to a targeted minimum of 150,000 tpa, the technical study for the construction of the BAF, and a new metallurgical study to advance the Company's Green Giant Vanadium Project.

In accordance with the investment agreement, Sir Mick Davis was appointed Chair of the Board of NextSource on March 15, 2021.

2. Initiation of Construction of Phase 1 of the Molo Graphite Mine

On March 19, 2021, the Company announced the awarding of the engineering, procurement, and construction management ("EPCM") contract to Erudite Strategies Ltd. This was followed by the commencement of procurement of processing plant equipment on May 11, 2021. Site works are expected to begin in Q3/Q4 2021, plant equipment installation beginning in Q1 2022, followed by plant commissioning in Q2 2022.

As outlined in the Company's 2019 Feasibility Study ("FS"), Phase 1 of the Molo Graphite Mine is estimated to cost US$25 million, including working capital. Production capacity is expected to be approximately 17,000 tpa of SuperFlake® graphite concentrate with FOB operating costs of US$566 per tonne.

3. Commercial Partnership & Offtake Secured with German Conglomerate thyssenkrupp

thyssenkrupp Materials Trading ("thyssenkrupp"), headquartered in Essen, Germany, is a major international materials trader. With offices in over 40 countries, thyssenkrupp Materials is the biggest mill-independent materials distributor & service provider in the western world.

As announced on May 25, 2021, following a multi-year verification process, thyssenkrupp entered into a long-term partnership with NextSource and signed an offtake agreement to secure SuperFlake® graphite concentrate for their refractories/foundries, expandable graphite (graphite foil) and battery anode production businesses.

4. Partnership with the Tesla Supply Chain to Build a Battery Anode Facility

On April 12, 2021, following a multi-year verification process, NextSource signed a binding agreement and exclusive partnership with two well-established and leading value-added graphite processors that currently supply SPG to leading Japanese anode and battery makers within the supply chains for Tesla and major Japanese automotive companies ("OEMs"). Through this collaboration, NextSource plans to construct and operate its own value-added BAF to produce SPG and eventually coated SPG, for sale into the supply chains for Tesla and other OEMs.

The Partners consist of NextSource's Japanese offtake partner ('Japanese Partner') and the Japanese Partner's SPG processing partner ('SPG Partner'). The Japanese Partner is a prominent Japanese trading company who is a major supplier of SPG to one of Japan's largest chemical companies that supplies materials for lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicle ("EV") applications. It currently supplies graphite anode material to Japanese automotive OEMs and the Tesla supply chain. The SPG Partner is a leading processor of SPG for the EV markets who owns and operates graphite anode processing facilities in China and is regarded by OEM anode producers to be a best-in-class processor and one of the highest quality suppliers of SPG globally. The Japanese and SPG Partners have had an alliance together for over 30 years and have been processing battery-grade graphite together for over 15 years.

Independent testing by various third-party end users of flake graphite confirmed that NextSource's SuperFlake® graphite meets or exceeds quality requirements for all major end-markets for natural flake graphite. NextSource’s 100 percent owned and fully permitted Molo graphite project drew investor attention for its large-high-quality flake graphite deposit and unique SuperFlake graphite concentrate. The company announced in May 2021, that former Xstrata CEO Sir Mick Davis committed a strategic investment of US$29.5 million in NextSource mining operations. This investment provided the entire funding to bring the Molo Graphite mine into production.

Vision Blue Resources, the firm that Davis founded in December 2020 to invest in battery and technology minerals, selected the Molo graphite project as its flagship investment, noting that the graphite market has been underinvested considering the increasing demand in recent years. “This investment in NextSource underlines our belief that the massive secular change in demand for critical battery material resources is not being met by an appropriate supply-side response, largely as a result of capital constraints,” Davis stated.

Molo Graphite Project

The Molo graphite project is a wholly owned feasibility-stage asset that ranks as one of the largest-known and highest quality flake graphite deposits in the world. The property is over 62.5 hectares, sits in the Tulear region of South-western Madagascar and is located 11.5 kilometers east of the town of Fotadrevo

Total combined graphite resources are measured at 141.28 million tonnes at 6.13 percent total graphitic carbon, with a contained ore reserve of 22.44 million tonnes at 7.02 percent graphitic carbon. The company has delinatined over 300 line kms of continuous graphite mineralization at surface. NextSource has virtually an unlimited supply of graphite it can bring to the market in lockstep with demand.

SuperFlake

NextSource has superior flake size distribution and well above the global average. The Molo asset is relatively unique for having almost 50 percent premium-priced large and jumbo flake graphite, and can achieve up to 98 percent carbon purity with simple flotation alone. The 100 percent owned Green Giant vanadium project is an advanced stage exploration project located in South-central Madagascar and is one of the world’s largest known vanadium deposits. The project leverages good mining conditions and convenient close proximity to NextSource’s flagship Molo graphite project.

The Green Giant Project is a rare type of vanadium deposit because it is sediment-hosted. No magnetic metals are associated with Green Giant’s vanadium, making the project ideal for producing high-purity vanadium pentoxide, a key material in vanadium redox batteries.

The property’s National Instrument 43-101 compliant resource measures an estimated 60 million tonnes of vanadium pentoxide at an average grade of almost 0.7 percent at a 0.5 percent cut-off.

Since 2008, Green Giant has seen extensive diamond drilling campaigns, soil sampling, airborne and ground geophysics and EM surveying. NextSource intends to continue developing the property’s three main zones, which are referred to as the Jaky, Manga and Mainty deposits.

Before listing Xstrata on the LSE as CEO he was CFO of Billiton plc and Chairman of Billiton Coal which he joined from the position of Eskom CFO. During his career in mining he has raised over US$40bn from global capital markets and successfully completed over US$120bn of corporate transactions, including the creation of the Ingwe Coal Corporation in South Africa; the listing of Billiton on the LSE; the merger of BHP and Billiton; as well as numerous transactions at Xstrata culminating in the sale to Glencore plc. Mr. Ian Pearce is the former CEO of Xstrata Nickel, and prior to that was the former COO of Falconbridge Limited, which was acquired by Xstrata Plc in 2006. Mr. Pearce previously served as Chair of the Mining Association of Canada and Chair of the Nickel Institute. He holds a BSc from the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa and an HNDT in Mineral Processing from the University of Johannesburg, South Africa.

Christopher Kruba — Director (Non-executive)

Mr. Kruba is Vice-President and Legal Counsel to Nostrum Capital Corporation and a number of related corporations that are part of the Toldo Group. The Toldo Group is headquartered in Windsor, Ontario and is composed of several privately held corporations in Canada and the United States, some of which have large manufacturing operations in diversified sectors and others which are involved in active and passive investments across capital markets throughout North America, Europe and Africa. In addition to his responsibilities as counsel to the Toldo Group, Mr. Kruba serves as corporate secretary to all the companies, is a member of group’s investment committee and he serves on the board of directors of many of the companies.

Mr. Kruba has extensive manufacturing and capital markets experience and has lead merges and acquisitions and participated in the management and strategic planning for numerous companies, including venture capital corporations in which the group has invested.

Nostrum Capital Corporation and Mr. Kruba personally have been investors in NextSource Materials Inc. since 2011.

North American Graphite Juniors Face Hurdles to Supply the EV Battery Space

Demand for graphite from North America is expected to continue increasing in the coming years as governments push for more domestic production to meet increasing sales of electric vehicles (EVs).

In order to meet this unprecedented demand, Benchmark Mineral Intelligence estimates that up to 150 new operations across natural and synthetic graphite are needed by 2035. Graphite is one of the most important elements in any EV battery, with between 50 and 100 kilograms of graphite, whether synthetic or natural, present within each vehicle.

Being a major industrial mineral, graphite already has scale on its side and has been able to accept early demand growth from lithium-ion battery sector with relative ease, according to Project Blue analysts. South Star CEO Shares Insight on Bringing Graphite Mine to Production

South Star Battery Metals (TSXV:STS,OTCQB:STSBF) CEO and Director Richard Pearce shared some lessons learned from his company’s journey to bring its Santa Cruz graphite project in Brazil to production.

“2008 was a real wakeup call to the mining sector,” Pearce said, explaining that the “old way” of doing things — where junior miners would go out and explore, produce studies and sell to a major mining company — is no longer a viable business today.

He cited the challenges with getting institutional funding for graphite projects and the lack of a standardized pricing structure for this critical battery metal.
