Gilead Sciences: Tatiana Williams Leads the Way With the Transinclusive Group

When Tatiana Williams was growing up as a young Trans woman in Florida, she faced many challenges and hardships - but she didn't find many resources available to her

"Like a lot of my friends, it was hard to have stable housing and I participated in sex work for survival," says Tatiana. "I had friends losing their lives to senseless murders or complications from HIV."

It was at a support group for sex workers that Tatiana began to think more expansively about what she and her friends needed to stay safe and healthy. To create change, she began speaking to those in positions of power, and in doing so was elected to the Transgender Health in Action group for the Florida Department of Health, which provides peer-on-peer workshops for the Trans community addressing issues such as health, safety and stigma..

Additionally, Tatiana's passion to help her community find a safe space and connections to resources led Tatiana to create Transinclusive Group, a Black-led Trans people's rights advocacy group in Florida. The organization offers everything from helping to change individuals' gender on state IDs, to HIV counseling and job training - all the things Tatiana herself was looking for decades earlier.

But the needs of the community are constantly evolving, and Tatiana saw firsthand how housing instability can have an impact on health and wellbeing. This year, she implemented a plan to remedy that - and with the support of a Gilead TRANScend grant, the Transinclusive Group opened a peer-run seven-bed housing program called CHOICES. The program is designed to be transitional. Residents can stay six months or so in housing and receive preventative healthcare, financial advice, job training and one-on-one case management.

"In this space, we can connect through our shared life experiences," says Tatiana. "A lot of our community members are experiencing challenges in their life so their healthcare kind of goes on the back burner. Here, we're able to keep them engaged in care and up to date with their doctor visits. We're hoping in the six months they're with us, they'll be able to move on to the next phase in their life."

The program is off to a great start, but already the need is outweighing the supply. The housing program isn't equipped to handle people with severe mental health issues, for example, and it doesn't have the security capacity to assist those fleeing from violence.

"People are always reaching out, but we only can do what we can do," Tatiana says. "Our goal is to be able to use this model and utilize the data we gather to see if we can get additional support, and maybe a larger space." This model of peer-run housing programs for Trans individuals adds an invaluable resource to the region.

"You are in a space where you know people understand your story and situation and are not going to judge you," Tatiana says. But her bigger goal is not just moving people out of a crisis situation but building a stronger community for the future. "How do we get to resiliency? How do we improve our quality of life together?" she asks. The key, Tatiana is sure, lies in community.

"We're doing this together and you're not alone," says Tatiana. "We understand you, we see you and we're meeting you exactly where you are."

CHMP Adopts Positive Opinion Recommending Hepcludex® for Full Marketing Authorization for the Treatment of Hepatitis Delta Virus

--   If Granted by the European Commission, Hepcludex will Become the Only Approved Treatment for HDV in the EU --

Gilead Sciences, Inc. (Nasdaq: GILD) today announced that the Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) of the European Medicines Agency (EMA) has adopted a positive opinion for Hepcludex ® (bulevirtide) for the treatment of adults with chronic HDV and compensated liver disease, and recommended granting full Marketing Authorisation (MA) that is no longer subject to specific obligations. Bulevirtide was initially granted conditional marketing authorisation in July 2020 to provide people living with HDV urgent access to treatment. The CHMP recommendation for full Marketing Authorisation of bulevirtide follows the submission of the Phase 3 MYR301 Week 48 study data, which reinforces the efficacy and safety profile of bulevirtide for the treatment of HDV.

Gilead Remains Steadfast in Support for Hepatitis C Elimination Efforts

Gilead Remains Steadfast in Support for Hepatitis C Elimination Efforts

The recent national conversation on hepatitis C (HCV) is an encouraging step towards viral hepatitis elimination in the U.S. With its long history of leadership in viral hepatitis, Gilead continues to support efforts that focus on HCV elimination. Gilead is proud that its medicines have treated over four million individuals living with HCV globally. Today, some 2.4 million people are living with HCV in the U.S., even though ~95% of those treated with direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) are cured. Prices of HCV medicines have dropped significantly, and many acknowledge that price is not a barrier for most payers and patients. Curative HCV drug therapies are just one part of an elimination strategy that needs to dedicate considerable resources and attention to screening and linkage to care so that all patients in need of HCV treatment can access it in a timely manner and achieve a cure

Radiopharmaceuticals Take Investors to the Forefront of Precision Oncology

Radiopharmaceuticals are emerging as one of the most promising innovations in modern medicine, particularly in precision oncology, and if recent billion-dollar investment deals are any indication, the potential for growth can be significant. Investors eyeing exposure to this emerging technology would benefit from a deeper understanding of the technology, its strategic applications and investment opportunities.

A groundbreaking technology in the field of oncology, radiopharmaceuticals combine radioactive substances with targeted molecules to revolutionise cancer detection and treatment. These innovative compounds are gaining significant attention due to their ability to deliver precise and targeted cancer therapies, minimising damage to healthy tissues while maximising therapeutic efficacy.

At their core, radiopharmaceuticals leverage the unique properties of radioactive isotopes, pairing them with molecules that have a high affinity for cancer cells. This combination allows for both diagnostic imaging and therapeutic applications, offering a level of precision previously unattainable in traditional cancer treatments.

Top 5 Life Science ETFs in 2024

Taking a position in a life science exchange-traded fund (ETF) provides exposure to a basket of stocks focused on the healthcare sector, while mitigating the risks of holding shares in a single company.

While ETFs provide diversification by their nature, fund managers often narrow down their offerings to follow a specific aspect of the market — for example, biotech or pharma. They also typically adjust the weight of ETF holdings to match movements in the life science industry in an effort to give investors the best possible returns.

There are many choices when it comes to life science ETFs, and to help investors understand their options, the Investing News Network has listed the top life science ETFs by year-on-year performance.
