The company focuses on developing intellectual property and establishing strategic partnerships to supply the necessary raw materials. Additionally, the company forged a collaborative agreement with Bosch to build a pilot plant for battery production. Another partnership opens up research opportunities, as GMG recently became a member of the Thermal and Fluid Sciences Affiliates Program at Stanford University, which serves as a two-way conduit that facilitates research and engineering.

GMG’s single-step extraction process uses natural gas and electric plasma to break down the base material into hydrogen and graphene powder. The extraction process and resulting graphene powder, known as Graphene G™ Powder, are proprietary. This has given GMG a cost-effective alternative to accessing pure graphene powder that eliminates the risk of contaminants that would otherwise lower its grade.

Graphene G™ Powder has allowed the company to develop intellectual property targeting the clean energy, HVAC and automotive markets. The company’s aluminum-ion battery is made without cobalt, copper or lithium. The battery also charges up to 70 times faster and offers up to three times more battery life than lithium-ion batteries.

In the energy storage space, GMG is collaborating with the University of Queensland, through funding from the Australian government, to develop and commercialize its graphene aluminum-ion (G+Al) batteries. Already, GMG has reported significantly improved performance of its G+Al batteries, increasing its calculated energy density by 93 percent from 150-160 Wh/kg to 290-310 Wh/kg. Power density has also increased to around 9,350 W/kg, a 33 percent increase since the last performance update the company announced in June 2021.

Following the commissioning of its pouch cell manufacturing equipment in June 2022, GMG has also begun producing its first G+Al batteries in pouch cell format. The manufacturing equipment is now part of GMG’s battery development centre, the company’s pilot production and testing plant.

Through an acquisition deal with OzKem Pty Ltd, GMG now owns the intellectual property and brand rights for the THERMAL-XR® coating products, which uses GMG graphene in combination with OzKem's base HVAC coating. Thermal-XR® is a cost-saving HVAC coating that offers improved conductivity of corroded heat-exchange surfaces.

Lastly, G™ Lubricant is a concentrated graphene and lubricating oil product, designed for automotive use that provides energy-savings and emissions-savings, and prevents wear.

Aluminum-Ion Battery

Aluminum-Ion Battery

GMG is pioneering new battery technologies to store the clean energy of the future. A partnership with the University of Queensland Research and UniQuest has assisted GMG in creating a graphene aluminum-ion (G+Al) battery. The world-exclusive battery technology has been laboratory tested and currently illustrates distinct advantages over lithium-ion batteries, such as improved charge time and energy storage.

Project Highlights:

  • Potentially Superior to Lithium-Ion Batteries: Current testing demonstrates that the company’s G+Al battery has a battery life up to three times greater than lithium-ion batteries. Additionally, testing has shown charging speeds up to 70-times faster.
  • No Need for High-Demand Battery Metals: Lithium faces a worldwide shortage, as are other metals necessary in manufacturing high-capacity batteries. GMG’s battery has an uncomplicated supply chain that does not require any high-demand battery metals.

Thermal-XR is an HVAC-R coating system that provides improved conductivity of corroded heat exchange surfaces. The product coats and protects damaged surfaces while also rebuilding lost thermal conductivity.

Project Highlights:

  • Increased HVAC Energy Efficiency: Thermal-XR improves the heat transfer rate due to using the company’s proprietary Graphene G™ Powder in its formulation. As a result, the HVAC system will require less power to operate.

GMG’s revolutionary lubricant uses roughly 1 percent lubricating oil and can be added to existing formulated lubricants. It can also be tailored by GMG to satisfy specific client needs. In addition, the product protects surfaces by reducing the friction coefficient and providing a protective layer between metal surfaces.

Craig Nicol - Chief Executive Officer

Craig Nicol has a career of over 20 years in delivering large-scale innovation, including leading multi-billion-dollar gas and LNG value chains in Australia and Asia Pacific, while managing sales and marketing teams across Asia Pacific for Shell International. Nicol has a bachelor’s engineering degree in manufacturing systems and a bachelor’s degree in business marketing from the Queensland University of Technology. Nicol is a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD) and the Australian Graphene Industry Association (AGIA) chair.

Frederick Kotzee - Chief Financial Officer and Director

Frederick Kotzee is a chartered accountant with more than 20 years of public markets company experience leading financial operations and strategic planning for multinational companies. Throughout his career, Kotzee has held various positions in the Anglo American Group. His roles included general manager of corporate finance, head of business development at Anglo Platinum and then chief financial officer of Kumba Iron Ore Limited, listed on the Johannesburg stock exchange. Kotzee was the CFO of the Australian listed Kidman Resources Limited, a lithium project developer, where he successfully secured financing and offtake agreements with large battery purchasing companies as well as supporting the company's ultimate acquisition by Wesfarmers Limited for more than $750m.

Dr. Ashok Kumar Nanjundan - Chief Scientific Officer

Dr Ashok Nanjundan has over 20 years of academic and commercial chemical and materials engineering experience focused on carbon nanomaterials (graphene) for energy storage and conversion applications. Nanjundan has held roles and has been the recipient of national and international fellowships. These include serving as adjunct associate professor, the University of Queensland, senior lecturer adjunct, Queensland University of Technology, Marie-Curie fellowship at the French Atomic Energy Commission, fellow at the Japanese Society for Promotion of Science (JSPS), fellow at Kumamoto University, Japan and Research fellow at Trinity College Dublin, Ireland. Lisa Roobottom - Chief Operating Officer

Lisa Roobottom has a career in the oil and gas and manufacturing industries spanning approximately 30 years, working in a number of roles, including as refinery operations manager and national health, safety & environment manager at various companies, such as Caltex, Ampol, Australian Laboratory Services and, most recently, Alpha HPA.
