It has been nine months since 3,100 workers walked off the job at Vale’s Canadian mining and smelting operations in Sudbury and Port Colborne, Ontario, and there seems little reason to believe the walkout would not go on for a year, given the reluctance of both the company and union to budge from their positions.

The press release is quoted as saying:

If Vale is looking to nail down a deal before the strike hits the one-year mark, they’re not letting on. The current plan is to continue ramping up production at the smelter, with an eye to eventually running it at full capacity, with or without the unionized workforce.
