Leading Gold Exploration in Central Newfoundland's Mining-Friendly Jurisdiction
K9 Gold (TSXV:KNC) is an exploration company that is focused on acquiring, discovering and developing gold deposits in North America. K9 Gold is currently developing its Stony Lake gold project in Central Newfoundland, one of Canada’s newest orogenic gold districts. This district is both mining-friendly and has access to reliable infrastructure.
The Stony Lake gold project is placed within Central Newfoundland’s intersecting Cape Ray and Valentine Lake structural trend, which is located along the prolific Dog Bay Line. The project has been found to cover the southwest extension of Sokoman Mineral’s (TSXV:SIC) Moosehead high-grade gold discovery and also lies northeast of Marathon Gold’s (TSX:MOZ) Valentine Lake deposit and west of New Found Gold Corp’s (TSXV:NFG) Queensway discovery. This makes the Stony Lake project an excellent location with favorable prospects for further exploration and discovery.
Since the 1800s, Newfoundland has been a mining region, with the province being nominated as the sixth largest copper producer in the world at the time. However, this region only recently became popular again in the late 1980s due to rising production in the gold industry. For example, geologists working for International Corona Corporation on the Pine Cove property near Ming’s Bight discovered visible gold in October 1990.
With potential for additional gold discoveries, K9 Gold finds itself in a strategic position when it comes to exploration of high-grade gold deposits in this region. This provides the company with a first-mover competitive advantage and has allowed K9 Gold to establish strong ties with local stakeholders, as well as a headstart on testing and surveying target areas of the project.
Additionally, Stony Lake is seen as a site that offers favorable exploration for oxidized silurian sedimentary rocks with significant post-sediment felsic intrusives. This discovery includes widespread low grade mineralized pyritic sandstone, quartz veins and quartz stockwork at 0.5 to 4.0 g/t gold, as well as gold mineralization enveloped throughout the quartz veins and stockwork.
In 2019, a preliminary field program was conducted and focused on prospecting, mapping and sampling, along with property-wide airborne magnetometer and radiometric surveying to map bedrock lithologies. The results of this exploration program showed eight areas of highly anomalous high-grade gold at 15.05 g/t.
Airborne surveying revealed a primary basement structure with multiple veins branching from it, raising expectations of structural trends to follow that of Sokoman’s Moosehead discovery, located east of the Stony Lake property. With this data, K9 Gold is able to better define and identify high-priority exploration targets, allowing for focused drilling and mining.
Combined with favorable positioning between multiple gold discovery projects headed by Sokoman, Marathon Gold and New Found Gold, K9 Gold’s primary project has access to reliable infrastructure. The project is surrounded by two major highways and has transmission lines running across the property as well. These routes and access points are expected to increase accessibility to the project and aid in the safe transportation of minerals and sample collection.
In October 2020, K9 Gold Corp established a highly skilled and experienced Technical Advisory Board for its gold exploration program. Jeff Poloni, the CEO of K9 Gold, stated, “We believe that we are onto something special at Stony Lake and the addition to our technical team is a key piece to achieving success.”
This team includes Chris Healey, former president and CEO of Titan Uranium and K9 Gold’s current qualified person, as well as Elmer B. Stewart, current CEO and president of Copper Fox Metals Inc. (TSXV:CUU) and an expert with over 42 years of experience overseeing financing and the acquisition of numerous base metals and gold projects.
